WED 2010

Under the Theme “Many Species. One Planet. One Future.” we seize the opportunity to inspire people by the diversity of nature, but also culture, their beauty and uniqueness and contemplate the many ways in which we may connect and (re)integrate them into our modern Egyptian lifestyles: riding bicycle to work, adopt roof gardening and organic foods, consider different forms of sustainable tourism, and reducing our negative impacts by choosing a sustainable life style.
This year the celebration of WED 2010 focuses on the “central importance to humanity of the globe’s wealth of species and ecosystems” and invites people to reflect on how much modern societies stand to gain by integrating the environment and nature’s biodiversity.
Biodiversity which can be defined as the abundance and diversity of living organisms, together with genetic diversity, assemblages of organisms and natural processes. However, biodiversity is much more than numbers of plants and animals; it is what sustains human life and well-being. Biodiversity provides the food we eat, the plants from which much of the world’s medicine comes, the clothes we wear, the trees that re-oxygenate the air we breathe and many more benefits.
The celebration of WED 2010 will not be limited to a one day celebration, but will extend to small events preceding the June celebration itself. These events include a documentary serious “Fate of our Earth” and School Competitions focusing on the WED 2010 theme, “Many Species. One Planet. One Future”.
