“Fate of Our Earth” documentary series is a collaboration between The Wadi Environmental Science Centre and Prince Alwaleed American Studies Centre – AUC, to raise awareness about BIG global issues that affect us, to start analyzing and discussing ways by which we can understand and maybe solve these issues.
The documentary Series is a lead up to the World Environment Day 2010 Celebration in Egypt that will take place on the 5th June 2010 at Al Azhar Park.
Death on the Nile
People living in Egypt’s Nile Delta are getting sick. Everyone is convinced dirty water is the cause.
Dr Nadia El-Awady: “Less than 100 metres upstream from where children play, a crime is being committed that will have a direct impact on their health for the rest of their lives. A truck carrying raw sewage, collected for a minor fee from the local villagers is dumping its contents directly into the irrigation canal. I want to see what local communities are doing to solve these problems, whether or not they even want to do anything about it.” To start Earth Report’s month long coverage of Africa, we join Dr El Awady’s investigation to find whoever is responsible for threatening the health of those living in Eygpt’s Nile Delta. Connecting Delta Cities How swift are cities in taking adequate response measures? We take a look at Alexandria, Jakarta, New York, and Rotterdam; four of the world’s coastal cities that will be – and already are being – directly affected by sea level rise. How big is this impact and what can the cities do to be prepared? On the basis of interviews, scientists, policymakers, and inhabitants reflect on the situation of their city. It becomes clear that each city is faced with its own dilemmas, cultural habits, political structure and history, which makes it difficult to undertake immediate and necessary action.
But besides the differences between the cities, the similarities in the dangers and challenges that they are facing are huge. The problems are global and can be tackled more efficiently with an exchange of knowledge and intensive cooperation.
